This collection contains Federal Census Indexes, State Census Indexes, and indexes to various Federal non-population schedules (Mortality Schedules, Veterans Schedules, Slaves Schedules) for most of the U.S. and parts of Canada. Early censuses were essentially basic counts of inhabitants, but as the nation grew so did the need for statistics that would reflect the characteristics of the people. Few, if any, records reveal as many details about individuals and families as do the U.S. federal censuses.
